You Gotta Be Real! Really!

How many times have you asked someone, “Hey, how’s it going?” only to be barraged with all the woes and cares and problems they have. More information than you bargained for?  Really, do you want to know someone’s worst day scenario, or are you just being polite?

Most of us are truly caring people, but we’re not in the counseling business.  What we really want is to show our concern.  And have a nice day.  But there are those among us who do need a sympathetic ear, someone to lean on from time to time.  Are you one of those people?

When you feel down and out, like the world has just taken the last breath of air out of your sails and you feel like giving up, that’s when you gotta start getting ‘real’ with yourself.  Suppose you take another look at your life from another perspective.  Some simple exercises can really make a difference in your day, your attitude and your life. Not to mention your friendships!

  • Be Authentic.  The next time someone asks you “how are you doing?” don’t give the same old pat answer, “Just fine.” Or worse yet, give them all the gory details of your miserable life!  Try being truly authentic with yourself and say what you really feel.  You might not be on top of the world that day, but at least you can give them an honest answer.  Try to find something good about your day to talk about.  You’ll feel better, and they’ll love to hear something good about you.
  • Develop an Attitude of Gratitude. We live in the richest country in the world.  We have so much to be thankful for, but most times we don’t realize how good we really have it. Be thankful for the little things in your life, for they are the big things.
  • Rest and Relax. Sometimes the stress in our lives starts to take over every aspect of what we do on a daily basis.  Take a deep breath, sit down with yourself for a few moments and give yourself the gift of a few a stress-free minutes in your day.  Whatever is going on in your life is not worth the damage it causes to your mind, body and spirit.  Ahh, breathe deep!

These few tips will go a long way towards balancing your mood and helping you be as authentic as you can. As they used to say at the video rental shops, be kind and rewind (yourself!)
